What are the OSHA Regulations for Medical Services and First Aid?
No matter how many precautions you take in the workplace, accidents can still happen. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration puts regulations in place to make sure you’re well prepared in the case of an emergency. Under Section 1910.151, the OSHA lays out the regulations for Medical services and first aid.
1910.151(a)
This section states, “The employer shall ensure the ready availability of medical personnel for advice and consultation on matters of plant health.” This means that in your emergency plan, you need to have an appointed professional you can call on any time there is a question about health concerns at any of your abilities. Many plants have an onsite nurse or primary medical provider that can be on call.
1910.151(b)
In the absence of an infirmary, clinic, or hospital in near proximity to the workplace which is used for the treatment of injured employees, a person or persons must be adequately trained to render first aid. It’s a good idea that any employee working near hazardous chemicals or with dangerous equipment goes through first aid training, so they can render help until medical professionals arrive in the event of an emergency.
1910.151(c)
Section 1910.151(c) calls for suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing to be installed within the work area of anyone working with hazardous chemicals that have the ability to harm the eyes or body.
