You have the right to request an inspection of your workplace if you suspect a violation of a safety or health standard is present or if an imminent danger exists. How to Appropriately Report Unsafe Working Conditions

  • Talk to Your Manager: OSHA advises you to report any unsafe working conditions to your manager or the safety and health committee at your company first, before taking any further action. It’s possible that management doesn’t realize certain hazards are present, so give them the opportunity to correct the problems on their own.
  • Gather Supporting Information: You don’t have to be certain that a specific OSHA violation has occurred, but you do need to gather as much supporting documentation as possible, so OSHA can determine if a hazard likely exists. Supporting information may include details on the number of employees working at the site and how many are exposed to the hazard, the types of materials/chemicals used and the kind of work done nearby.
  • File a Complaint with OSHA: If your company fails to take appropriate action and you believe you have supporting evidence to prove the organization is violating safety standards, you can file a complaint with OSHA. The organization will review your case and determine if further action should be taken.
